Why use washable* nappies?

washable nappies

Washable nappies - the real alternative:
Real easy - to use and wash
Real savings - up to £500 on one child
Real rubbish reduction - half your bin

* Washable nappies are also known as cloth, terry, reusable, cotton and non-disposable nappies.

Norfolk County Council continues to provide an incentive scheme to help parents get started with washable nappies. Please go to the ‘Find out more…’ list below.

Modern, washable nappies and wraps have changed a great deal. They are available in a variety of sizes and materials, from flat to shaped and plain to patterned. There are ‘quick drying’ versions and washable nappies never need ironing. They are comfortable and trendy and very easy to wash.

Using disposable nappies on one baby will produce about one tonne of nappy waste. For just one baby, that’s half a household bin or five thousand disposables compared to 15-30 washables! Disposable nappies are currently disposed of at landfill sites, and these disposal costs are paid for by council tax payers. It is also estimated that disposable nappies will take up to 500 years to decompose in a landfill site.

A 2008 report by the Environment Agency concluded that washable nappies may be 40% more environmentally friendly than disposables if parents follow best practice:

1. Washing nappies in a full load at 60˚C or less
2. Outdoor line drying
3. Reusing nappies on a second child

Parents will spend around £1000 on just one baby using disposable nappies. Using washable nappies could save you up to £500 per child and more on a second child. Why not give them a try – it’s your choice?
