Major waste and recycling projects

Wymondham Recycling Centre – a new recycling centre for South Norfolk

The new Wymondham Recycling Centre is planned for land off the B1172 London Road, next to an existing National Highways depot and close to the A11.

Why are we moving:

The new Wymondham Recycling Centre will have better access, with separate areas for the operating vehicles and the public. We are proposing a split level site so there will be no steps to access the bins.

We are investing £2.2m in a larger, modern site that does not need to close during the day for the site to be serviced.

Key features planned for your new site:

  • A split-level site providing step free access to containers
  • Separate service area so the site does not need to close for essential waste collection and servicing operations
  • More parking spaces including dedicated
  • staff car and cycle parking
  • A reuse shop
  • Pay as You Throw service for disposal of construction and demolition waste
  • Trade service for small businesses

Timetable for the development:

  • Our consultation closed December 2022
  • Planning application to be submitted in spring 2024
  • Recycling centre construction commences in late 2024
  • Recycling centre opening late 2025

New recycling centre for Sheringham

A new improved recycling centre is proposed to replace Sheringham Recycling Centre and provide a larger, modern site that does not need to close during the day for the site to be serviced.

Key features will include:

  • A brand-new reuse shop
  • Separate service area so the site does not need to close for essential waste collection and servicing operations
  • More parking spaces including dedicated staff parking
  • Pay as You Throw service for disposal of construction and demolition waste
  • Trade service for small businesses
  • Junction improvements to the junction with the A148

We have incorporated these features into our plans. Our consultation closed on 31 July 2022 and comments were taken into consideration before the planning application was made. The consultation results will be found on the Consultation Finder webpage.

Timetable for the development:

  • Our consultation closed July 2022
  • Planning application was submitted in February 2023
  • Planning application decision expected early 2024
  • Recycling centre construction commences in summer 2024
  • Recycling centre opening late 2024 or early 2025

Other improvement works

Improvements to Morningthorpe

We're proposing a new site to replace the current Morningthorpe Recycling Centre. We are currently searching for the right land to relocate this well-used site to.

Previous improvements

The Greater Norwich area has benefitted from two brand new recycling centres that opened in 2021.

The Norwich North recycling centre replaced the Mile Cross recycling centre in September 2021.

The Norwich South site replaced the smaller Ketteringham recycling centre in November 2021.

Both the Norwich North and Norwich South sites are at locations with good transport links to make them accessible to as many people as possible in the growing Norwich area.
