Summer Reading Challenge 2024

Children can get creative with this year's Summer Reading Challenge, Marvellous Makers!

The Summer Reading Challenge is a FREE holiday activity for children aged 4-11. It's all about reading for fun, aiming to improve children's reading skills and confidence. Children can read anything they like (really - anything!) and collect free rewards for their reading. For under 5s there is a mini challenge, so they don't miss out.

Developed by The Reading Agency in partnership with Create, this year's challenge is all about being creative - in lots of different ways!

How it works

Sign up for the Summer Reading Challenge at your local library or mobile library

Children will receive a free pack that follows the Marvellous Makers characters as they try to find creative objects that have gone missing (thanks to a cheeky squirrel!).

Children can set their own reading goals, but we recommend they try to read six books throughout the summer. These can be physical books borrowed from the library or eBooks borrowed online.

Each time children finish a book, visit the library to collect a special sticker to add to the pack. The stickers will reveal the missing objects and show the creations the Marvellous Makers have been able to make from them.

When children complete the challenge, they will also get a certificate and medal.

You can also join on the Summer Reading Challenge website. All the resources are provided online so you won't need to pick up a pack or stickers from us unless you want to, but you are welcome to borrow our books to complete the challenge.

The fun Summer Reading Challenge video shows you how it all works!

Books to read

For inspiration about what to read, there's a Marvellous Makers booklist, which includes picture books, early readers and non-fiction books. But children can read anything as part of the challenge - from comics to recipe books - so they don't have to stick to the booklist.

You can browse our children's book catalogue online and reserve books to pick up in your local library.

If you struggle to visit a library regularly you can download children's books from our virtual library of eBooks, eNewspapers, eMagazines and eAudio.

What if you're not a member of the library?

If you're not already a library member, then joining is free and easy. You can either visit us and a friendly member of staff will be able to join you and your family straight away (you will need to bring proof of address such as a utility bill), or you can join on the Summer Reading Challenge website.

Once you've joined the library, you will have access to thousands of free books in libraries and online to complete the challenge. It's worth noting that there are no overdue fees on children's cards, so if you temporarily misplace a book or are a bit late getting the books back to the library, you won't be charged.

Summer library events

And there's more! To make the Summer Reading Challenge even more fun, we are holding lots of fun events and activities in our libraries - and they're all free! Take a look at the events on near you.
