The role

To help us with our ambitions, we are looking for a senior level expert, to advise on public health practice across the spectrum of both our direct work and that of our partners. As a Consultant in Public Health, you will support the Director of Public Health to deliver their statutory public health functions across Norfolk with opportunities to help shape and develop our ambitious aims for prevention and work with key partners and across the Integrated Care Partnership (ICP).   

The current area needing Consultant input is adult health improvement on topics such as smoking/vaping, whole system approaches to obesity/healthy weight/physical activity and supporting the DPH with primary prevention within the ICS - though portfolios are agreed with successful candidates and can vary over time across the breadth of local authority public health. 

The role requires a high level of intellectual rigour, political awareness, negotiation and motivation skills, and flexibility to deal with complex public health issues, advise and make recommendations. Tact and diplomacy are also essential as is the ability to understand, work with and influence others.  

Our ideal candidate  

You will be passionate about public health, health improvement, prevention, behaviour change and reducing inequalities. 

You will be on the GMC Specialist Register / GDC Specialist Register / UK Voluntary Register (UKPHR) for Public Health Specialists or be a specialty registrar within 6 months of gaining entry and will be able to evidence CPD requirements in accordance with Faculty of Public Health requirements or other recognised body.  

You will also be able to demonstrate the following:  

  • In depth understanding of the health and care system and other key system partners and their relationships with both local and national government  
  • Ability to influence at senior level, including directors and CEOs  
  • Ability to lead teams and contribute effectively in matrix teams led by colleagues  
  • A commitment to work within a political system irrespective of personal political affiliations  
  • Experience of using complex information to explain public health issues to a range of audiences  
  • In depth knowledge of evidence based public health practice and commitment to continuous improvement.
