Case study: Work experience at Norwich Airport

Norwich Airport wanted to offer autistic people and people with learning disabilities the chance to get real, hands-on work experience in a busy working environment. The airport linked up with the Norwich-based day service, Assist Trust, to develop this further. Adapted and informal interviews were held for anyone interested in a work experience placement. The training and induction process was very supportive for those successful.

Work experience roles were identified through 'job carving' where opportunities were created to meet and suit the needs of the individual working the role. Duties included greeting passengers in the main terminal, assisting with baggage, helping passengers needing special assistance through the terminal and security, as well as helping customers with orders and cleaning tables in the onsite café.

Throughout 2021, our Skills and Employment Team (SET) worked with Norwich Airport to become a Disability Confident employer. SET helped the airport create a 'shadow day' for an autistic individual who was interested in working in baggage handling but had no previous experience. The client was given a behind the scenes tour of the airport before shadowing the baggage handling team for the day and trying some elements of the role. They absolutely loved their shadow day and got on well with the team.

SET is currently working with the airport to develop a longer work experience placement for the client within the special assistance team and other relevant training opportunities. SET is also investigating potential shadow days for other individuals.

"It's fantastic to be able to support people with their personal development and all the people on placements have really become part of the airport team. We hope our experience will encourage other Norwich businesses to look at how they can provide similar placements for people with learning disabilities and autism and help them on their journey towards paid employment."  Jamie Price, Airport Security Manager
