Active play outdoors and indoors

Young children are naturally curious about the world around them. Being active in the outdoor environment helps children to stay healthy, build muscles and strengthen bones. It also supports well-being and self-esteem. Playing outside gives children the chance to explore, experiment and think about risks, for example, being in the rain or wind, climbing and balancing, splashing in a muddy puddle.

Around the world, physical activity guidelines suggest that children aged two to five-years old, should engage in at least three hours active play each day. This can include walking to the shop or nursery, going swimming, or playing in a park, garden, woodland or on the beach. It also includes active opportunities indoors, such as dancing, jumping on the bed, being tickled and rough and tumble play.
