Higher level qualifications

Early Years Foundation Degree (EYFD)

An EYFD is studied at the same level as the first two years of a full degree.

Training providers offer full time or part time routes and you can expect to take between two and approximately four years to complete, depending on the course you choose. To undertake an EYFD, it is advised that you hold a relevant level 3 qualification and have at least two years experience. During your studies you will need to continue working in an appropriate setting for a minimum of ten hours per week. On completion of the course you will have the option to top up your qualification to a full degree, such as the BA (Hons) in Early Childhood Studies and also one of the Early Years Initial Teacher Training (EYITT) pathways in order to achieve Early Years Teacher Status.

BA (Hons) Early Childhood Studies

(Full degree programme or top up year)

The full BA (Hons) degree is a level 6 qualification studied either three years full time or longer for part time students, and dependent on the course chosen. To undertake the full degree course, it is advised that you hold a relevant level 3 qualification and have at least two years experience. During your studies you will need to continue working in an appropriate setting for a minimum of ten hours per week.

The top up is a one year course. To undertake the top up year, you will need to hold an Early Years Foundation Degree and be working in a setting for a minimum of ten hours per week. Once you’ve successfully completed your degree you will have the option to go on to one of the Early Years Initial Teacher Training (EYITT) pathways in order to achieve Early Years Teacher Status.
