Special education provision we expect

What SEN Support is required in schools

Places of learning are required to meet the learning needs of every child in their school. This includes those learners identified as having special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND).

Mainstream places of learning must:

  • Use their best effort and do everything they can to make sure that a child with SEND gets the support they need
  • Ensure that children and young people with SEND, engage in the activities of the school alongside pupils who do not have SEND
  • Designate a teacher to be responsible for coordinating SEND provision (the SEN coordinator or SENCO)
  • Tell parent carers when they are making special educational provision for a child
  • Write an annual SEN information report. This explains how they have put in place their SEND policy. This should be published on their website
