Continuing with English and maths post-16

If a young person doesn't achieve English and maths GCSEs at grades 4-9 at school, they will be expected to continue studying these subjects post-16. This applies to all post-16 options, including further education, apprenticeships and traineeships. This is to improve the young person's chances of getting a job.

A young person with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), may be asked to study towards functional skills or other qualifications in these subjects instead of GCSEs. This will depend on their ability.

If a young person is unsure whether they will achieve GCSE grades 4-9 in English and/or maths, it is a good idea to find out how this may affect their future study plans.

Things to consider for post-16 study

  • Parent carers and the young person should talk to learning providers about the entry requirements for any post-16 courses they are interested in. The learning provider will be able to advise what it will mean if the young person doesn't achieve English and maths GCSE 4-9 grades
  • Parent carers and the young person should speak to their careers/guidance adviser. They will be able to give information and advice
  • If a young person has an Educational, Health and Care (EHC) plan, parent carers or the young person should speak to their EHC plan coordinator. They will be able to give information and advice
