What is the role of a headteacher or principal?
The headteacher has responsibility for the day-to-day management of all aspects of the school’s work, including provision for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). The headteacher should keep the governing body fully informed and also work closely the school’s SEN coordinator (SENCO) or SEN team.
The headteacher and governing body oversees the monitoring and review of all the school policies, including the SEN policy or SEN Information Report and the Access Plan. The headteacher oversees all procedures used in the school, including those used by the SENCO. All schools must publish their SEN Information Report on their school website.
In some smaller schools, particularly primary schools, the headteacher may also be the SENCO.
