Virtual school for children in care

The virtual school for children in care (children looked after by the local authority or in care) has been set up to ensure that children in public care get the best possible support with their education.

Children and young people in the virtual school will already be placed in a mainstream school or specialist provision, but they are also on the roll of the Virtual School - which means they get additional support and encouragement if needed.

The virtual school has a headteacher, a governing body, management team and staff, just like a ‘real’ school, and it monitors the progress of the pupils on its roll and puts in place specific support to help them succeed. It does not replace the child's existing school but instead complements it.
