Community nursing

A child or adult will be under a community nursing team, if they have a nursing need that can be cared for in a community setting.

This will include:

  • Home oxygen
  • Feeding tubes
  • Catheters
  • Tracheostomy
  • Intravenous antibiotics
  • Injections
  • Wound care

The nurses will also visit patients with cancer to take blood when needed.

Community nursing aims to keep children, young people and adults out of hospital. Nurses will go into homes, schools and other care facilities to see patients.

Community nurses can also help to train other people involved in the patients care how to manage their medical need. They can also train the patient themselves, if appropriate.
