Financial support for adult learners

We can give you advice if you are looking for financial support or help with learning expenses.

Call us on 01603 306551 or email learner.services@norfolk.gov.uk for more information.

Free courses for adults

If you earn less than £16,009 a year then your Entry Level, Level 1 or Level 2 course is free, subject to certain conditions. Read the course details before you book or contact us if you're not sure.

If you are aged between 19 - 23 years old and don’t already have a full Level 3 qualification, this course could be free. Guidance about course levels.

Help with expenses

If you're on a low income we may be able to help you with expenses such as:

  • Travel to and from your class – bus/train fares or petrol and parking
  • Books, pens, folders etc
  • Childcare while you learn
  • Some of the course fees if you can’t get it for free

This support comes from the Discretionary Learner Support Fund and is for courses below level 3 which lead to a qualification.

Download the application form.

When we've received your form we'll email you to let you know how we can help.

Remember to keep all your bus tickets, petrol receipts and parking tickets as we'll need these later.

Advanced Learner Loans

If your course is level 3 or 4, you can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan.

An Advanced Learner Loan isn’t like other loans because:

  • It doesn’t have to be paid back until you are earning more than £25,000 a year
  • Repayments are linked to how much you earn, not how much you borrow
  • It won’t affect your credit rating
  • Your current credit rating doesn't affect the application

Get more information about Advanced Learner Loans on the gov.uk website. Or you can call us on 01603 306551 or email learner.services@norfolk.gov.uk.
