Red, Amber and Green travel training scheme

What is it?

Red, Amber and Green is a free training scheme, to help vulnerable young people and adults develop their road safety and life skills. This is so they can become safe, independent pedestrians and travellers. The training scheme helps:

  • Make them aware of the risks when travelling
  • Provides them with strategies to take positive actions to remain safer on the roads

Who is the travel training suitable for?

  • Students who are under 16-years-old in schools and colleges
  • Students who are over 16-years-old in schools and colleges
  • Adults attending day services

Who trains the students and adults?

The Red, Amber and Green training scheme is delivered by existing members of staff within educational settings and day centres. The TITAN team will give them full support, training them at their workplace (the training is a two hour session) and providing all the resources they will need.

How does the travel training scheme work?

The Red, Amber and Green travel training scheme is based on a series of small tasks. These are repeated and recorded until an individual is proficient at the relevant tasks for that stage.

The young person or adult is then tested on these tasks. There are three different levels of tasks, which show different levels of independence. Young people and adults have the opportunity to work towards their Red, Amber and Green books. Certificates will be awarded for passing the three different levels of the scheme.

Want to find out more?

If you would like to deliver the Red, Amber and Green training scheme within your school, college or day service, email titan@norfolk.gov.uk.

A meeting will be arranged and a member of the TITAN team will visit you at your workplace to discuss their services. TITAN will then book in a session to train your staff.

  • Research shows that students learn about roads, traffic and safe behaviour most effectively through first-hand experiences
  • It is a great tool to reward a student
  • It is a flexible programme which can be adapted to support all vulnerable students. This includes young people with SEND and those with high levels of anxiety and emotional health issues. It can link in with your PHSE and life and functional skills programmes, road safety, cycling proficiency, individual education plans, personal learning plans, pastoral support plans and EHC plans
  • It can link with your school travel plan and other school initiatives such as healthy schools, outdoor learning, road safety and reducing carbon footprint
  • It can enhance students understanding of road safety, prior to undertaking their Summer Buddy Service (green test) post 16 travel training
  • We supply free bus passes for students who take part in TITAN activities. These can be used on any Norfolk bus service between 09:00 -15:00 (during term-time only)
