Taking examinations

When do pupils take public/national exams?

Pupils usually take public examinations in Year 11 or in the sixth form.

What are foundation qualifications?

Some pupils will not be ready to take GCSEs at age 16. For these pupils foundation qualifications have been developed. These qualifications are designed to recognise the progress the pupils make and to provide a basis for further study.

What do I do if the school will not make special arrangements for my child’s exams?

Talk to the school’s exam officer. You should go through any special requests you have for your child. The school can only make those special arrangements that comply with the exam board’s rules.

What should I do if my child is going to miss an exam?

Inform the school. If your child is ill you will need to obtain a doctor’s note. The school can then notify the exam board about this and request any special arrangements.
