In addition to the nationally recognised qualifications, we offer a variety of non-accredited courses for which candidates are awarded a Fast Lane Training Services Certificate of Attendance.

Most of these courses can be delivered in-house/on site and can be tailored to meet your needs.

Who should attend?

This course is offered as a combined theory and practical training and assessment package.  Suitable for novices and experience candidates who operate, or who are responsible for monitoring operatives working with, hand held cut-off saws or grinders.

Course objectives

The syllabus for this course was prepared to meet the training requirements of PUWER 98 & HSG17.  

This course aims to provide employees who use hand held cut-off saws and grinders the knowledge and skills required to operate equipment in a safe and competent manner.

By the end of the course candidates will have an understanding of the following for hand held machines:

  • The safe fitting, use, storage of types 27, 41 & 42 wheels fitted to hand held cut-off saws
  • The requirements of the regulations and HSE advisory literature
  • Hazards and accidents arising from the use of wheels and disks
  • Types and markings on wheels and disks
  • Correct inspection for damage to wheels, disks and cut off saw

Training and assessment

Candidates will receive theory and practical training and assessment throughout the day.

One day (approximately six hours)

£95 per person. This fee is inclusive of full training, theory and practical assessment, FLTS Certificate of Attendance.

Courses ‘at request’ – with special offer

We are able to provide this training as a ‘closed course’. The fee is £700 per course; inclusive of full training, assessment and FLTS Certificate of Attendance per candidate. Please note that a maximum of 10 candidates per course applies. If you book the full 10 candidates the fee is equivalent to £70 per person, saving £25 per person – a total saving of £250.

(Experienced candidates only)

Who should attend?

This course is available to experienced candidates only.  Candidates will have experience of and regularly operate hand held cut-off saws or grinders.

Training and assessment

Candidates attending this course will receive light touch refresher training and will participate in reassessment of their theoretical knowledge and practical use of equipment.

We are only able to provide this training as a ‘closed course’ to organisations that have experienced candidates requiring light touch refresher training and reassessment.  

The fee is £575 per course.  Please note that a maximum of 8 candidates per course applies.  This fee is inclusive of light touch refresher training, theory and practical reassessment, FLTS Certificate of Attendance.

Special Offer

Book two ‘Abrasive Wheels/Cut-off Saws (light touch refresher training and assessment)’ courses on the same day and the second course will be half price. Total fee for two courses on the same day = £862.50 (equivalent to £53.90 per person, when each course is fully booked with eight candidates).

Who should attend?

This course is offered as a combined theory and practical training and assessment package and as such is suitable for novices and experienced candidates who are required to locate underground services in the highway prior to excavations, or supervisors/managers who are responsible for overseeing works that require the location of underground services.

Course aims and objectives

Designed in line with HSG47, this course aims to provide employees working within the highway sector the underpinning knowledge and skills required to understand and use equipment to avoid underground services as part of a safe system or work.

On completion of the course attendees should be able to:

  • Identify associated Hazards
  • Explain the Safe System of Works to HSG47
  • State the need for Cable Avoidance

and demonstrate the correct use of:

  • Underground services drawings
  • Cable Avoidance Tool (C.A.T)
  • Generator and Ancillary equipment

Training and assessment

Candidates will receive theory and practical training and assessment throughout the day.

Course duration

One day (typically six hours)

(Alternatively, for £135 per person the candidate will be registered with City & Guilds and will be awarded City & Guilds Street Works certification and SWQR card for key certificate ‘LA: Location and Avoidance of Underground Apparatus’).

We are able to provide this training as a ‘closed course’. Please note that a maximum of 12 candidates per course applies.

The fee is £750 per course; inclusive of full training, assessment and FLTS Certificate of Attendance per candidate.

(For an additional £40 per person, candidates can will be registered with City & Guilds and will be awarded City & Guilds Street Works certification and SWQR card for key certificate ‘LA: Location and Avoidance of Underground Apparatus’).

Who should attend?

This course is offered as a combined theory and practical training and assessment package and as such is suitable for all levels of employees who have to manually handle articles as part of their employment duties.

Course objectives

This course aims to provide employees with an understanding and awareness of manual handling and their individual and collective responsibilities under the company policies and legislation.

On completion of the course candidates will be able to identify the:

  • Hazards before and during the handling of materials
  • Associated risks
  • Correct Personal Protective Equipment required (and use of)
  • Alternative handling methods available

Candidates will also be able to:

  • Carry out assessment of items to be handled and associated risks
  • Use/apply correct lifting techniques

Book two ‘Manual Handling’ courses on the same day and a 25% discount will be applied. The total fee for two courses on the same day is £880 (equivalent to £36.67 per person, when each course is fully booked with 12 candidates each).
