Befriender Karolyn Warrant has been visiting 82 year-old Gladys Dyke since June 2016.
“Age UK Norwich try to match befrienders with people who live close by and make every effort to partner people with the same interests.
“When Gladys and I first met, we hit it off straightaway, we have the same naughty sense of humour. I remember we wound up Sheena the co-ordinator and said we didn’t get on. We had a really good laugh about that and from that moment we clicked!”
Gladys has been married for 61 years and when she lost her son four years ago, she found it difficult to cope. “It got to the point where I didn’t want to go out and I would sleep nearly all day. When I received counselling I was referred to the befriending service by Age UK Norwich. It’s very popular, I had to wait a while but it was worth it.”
Karolyn visits Gladys every week and spends several hours either chatting or doing some activity. Every other week, they visit the library at the Forum to take part in Time Travellers. Gladys said: “I can’t walk too far so I love going to this group, it gets me out and everyone is so friendly. As soon as you walk through the door, they ask if you’d like a cup of tea or coffee. We really enjoy the local history. I love churches and K is going to take me to Norwich Cathedral this year.”
Age UK Norwich has signed up to Norfolk County Council’s In Good Company campaign, which aims to reduce isolation. Find out more about In Good Company.
