Learn something new with Norfolk Community Learning Services

19 May 2017

As part of the national Festival of Learning, Norfolk Community Learning Services (NCLS) is running free taster sessions at Wensum Lodge on King’s Street in Norwich from Tuesday 30 May to Saturday 3 June.

There’s a variety of courses for people to try, whether learning to improve job prospects, increase skills or just for fun.

As well as language courses including Italian and Spanish, there’s a chance to have a go at British Sign Language and lip-reading.

Brush up on computer skills with Word and Excel tasters, as well as courses covering the basics of creating code for websites and making the most of social media.

Among the arts and crafts tasters on offer, there’s an introduction to t-shirt printing techniques, sewing workshop, guide to digital photography and a taste of animation.

The range of courses doesn’t end there as there’s also the opportunity to find out about crowdfunding, explore science in action, learn the basics of story-writing and much more – including sessions outside the classroom as there are history and nature walks to enjoy.

llgun Yusuf, Head of Service for NCLS, said: “These taster sessions are a great way for people to try out NCLS courses before they commit to something longer term. We hope that the range of courses means that there’s something for everyone. It’s our aim to help people progress to the next stage of learning - whether that is a career change, increased independence or the pursuit of a hobby.”

Karen Wortley completed a photography course with NCLS, which resulted in her making a career change: “Studying photography through Norfolk Community Learning Services helped me change my life. I quit corporate London for North Norfolk and, although my quality of life improved, I felt quite isolated and lost confidence in my skills. I enrolled on a photography course with NCLS which led to a professional arts qualification. The dedicated, talented and inspirational teachers made a huge impact on my success and the skills I learned gave me a new lease of life as I am now earning an income from my photography.”

The free taster sessions will run from Tuesday 30 May to Saturday 3 June and booking is essential. For the full programme of sessions and to book, please go to our Adult learning section or call 0344 800 8020.

NCLS has been shortlisted for a national award in recognition of its performance turnaround, achieving a ‘Good’ Ofsted rating in just 15 months. The service is one of six national finalists in the Most Improved Council category of the Municipal Journal’s Local Government Achievement Awards and will find out whether it has won in June.
