Crucial Crew safety training success

09 March 2018

Hundreds of Norfolk school children from across Breckland have been learning vital safety skills thanks to the Crucial Crew Project run by Norfolk Fire & Rescue Service.

More than 700 year six pupils, aged 10 and 11, from 31 schools in the area attended a two hour session during the week.  It provided safety tips on topics from fire safety, first aid and water safety, through to healthy relationships, internet safety, drugs and alcohol awareness and how to make an emergency kit.  The event was supported by a range of partners including Norfolk Constabulary, Norfolk County Council, HM Coastguard, Norfolk Resilience Forum, St John Ambulance and the Matthew Project.

Two sessions were held every day from Monday to Thursday at Letton Hall Christian Conference Centre, so that 716 children could take part.  Volunteers from several local rotary clubs helped to staff the event.

Chairman of Norfolk County Council, Councillor John Ward, visited the event to see first hand the work being done by Norfolk Fire & Rescue Service and its partners.  He said:  “Crucial Crew provides an opportunity for local children to learn about a whole host of different issues and how to stay safe and deal with an emergency situation.

“It is open to every year six child in Norfolk and has huge proven benefits, with reports back that previous attendees have put their new skills to effective use in emergency and other situations.  It was great to see the messages being put across in such a fun and engaging way and I congratulate Norfolk Fire & Rescue Service on such a fantastic project, which is offered for free.”
