Award-winning author and artist, Chris Riddell, to visit Norfolk and Norwich Millennium Library

31 July 2018

Norfolk and Norwich Millennium Library and Macmillan Children’s Books are delighted to be working together to host throughout August an exhibition of artwork from renowned author-illustrator, Chris Riddell.  The exclusive exhibition will feature original paintings from the upcoming new picture book from Norfolk’s semi-permanent resident Riddell – the first that he has authored and illustrated in over eight years.

‘Once Upon a Wild Wood’ exhibition will run from 1-31 August, with free entry for all the family, open Monday-Friday 10am-7pm, Saturday 9am-7pm, and Sunday 10.30am-4.30pm.

Inspired by the beautiful woodland around Riddell’s Norfolk home, Once Upon a Wild Wood is a richly imagined story packed full of traditional fairy tale characters as you've never seen them before.  Little Green Raincape is on her way to Rapunzel's party deep in the wild woods and along the way she must solve a wealth of classic fairy tale problems – not least mend a lovelorn beast's broken heart.  Once Upon a Wild Wood publishes in hardback on 23 August 2018.

As part of the ‘Once Upon a Wild Wood’ exhibition Chris Riddell will be appearing at the library in a public families’ event on Wednesday 22 August at 4pm, in association with Waterstones Norwich.  He will talk about his new book and live-illustrate fairy tale characters.  There are limited tickets available for this not-to-be-missed event.

Chris Riddell, who is President of the School Libraries Association as well as ambassador for the book gifting charity BookTrust, says:  “I spend as much time as possible at my Norfolk cottage, and when I’m there working in my studio I’m very often distracted by the beautiful woods that border the garden.  The story of Little Green Raincape’s journey along a wooded path had been bubbling in my imagination for a long time and it’s a joy to see it published.  Even more of a joy is that the Millennium Library is hosting an exhibition of artwork from the book.  Fairy tales, libraries and Norfolk – three of my favourite things!”

Cllr Margaret Dewsbury, Chairman of Norfolk County Council's Communities Committee, said:  “We are thrilled to be hosting the ‘Once Upon a Wild Wood’ exhibition of Chris Riddell’s artwork at the Norfolk and Norwich Millennium Library, and we’re looking forward to welcoming Chris to the library for his live-illustration event on 22 August.  With its delightfully fun fairy tale theme, I’m sure lots of families will visit over the school summer holidays to spot Red Riding Hood, Thumbelina, Rapunzel, Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, the three bears, the seven dwarves and many more familiar characters. This is another superb event, alongside our Summer Reading Challenge, to help encourage young readers to keep up their interest in books over the summer.”

Hannah Ray, Editorial Director of Chris Riddell’s picture books at Macmillan Children’s Books comments:  “Once Upon a Wild Wood is Chris Riddell at his picture storybook finest.  The book is a visual feast from start to finish, illustrated with warmth and humour and full of witty details to discover on every page.  It is wonderful that Chris’s stunning original paintings for the book have been curated into an exhibition for families to enjoy this summer.”
