Former Leader Derrick Murphy has passed away

28 October 2019

Former County Council Leader Derrick Murphy has sadly passed away, it was confirmed on Saturday.

Tributes have poured in from councillors and MPs both past and present.

Cllr Murphy served for four years, first standing for the division of Freebridge, King’s Lynn in June 2009, and in 2010 became leader of the council.

Council leader Andrew Proctor said: “During an unprecedented difficult financial climate Derrick was instrumental in spearheading transformation programmes to make sure that Norfolk was financially secure for the future.

“He drove forward campaigns such as the dualling of the A11, promoting Better Broadband for Norfolk, established the A47 Alliance and progressed the Northern Distributor Road. His leadership also helped with the launch of Norse Care and initiated the Norfolk's Armed Forces Community Covenant.

“My thoughts are very much with his family and friends at this sad time”

Council Chairman Harry Humphrey said: “I served under Derrick as a member of his cabinet. Derrick was a very determined Councillor and worked hard for the people of Norfolk.”
