Statement by Cllr John Fisher regarding the council decision to continue with plans to close outdoor education service at Holt Hall
11 January 2021
Cllr John Fisher, cabinet member for Children’s Services, said: “Councillors made a clear decision at an extraordinary full council meeting today (11 January) to support the cabinet decision in December to continue with the process of closing the outdoor education service at Holt Hall.
“The views of schools, staff and volunteers were considered in making the cabinet decision last year.
“Holt Hall is used by fewer than three percent of Norfolk’s children each year and running at a three-year deficit of £270,000. It requires £600,000 of maintenance over the next decade.
“So this now means we will continue with our plans to take on a more strategic role for outdoor learning - building partnerships across the sector, supporting practice development and securing outdoor learning investment opportunities that benefit Norfolk.
“I am confident that by retaining and expanding our role as an adviser to schools and community groups we can ensure more children in the county have access to outdoor learning.
“I completely understand that people have fond memories of residential visits at the hall but we have to consider how we can make our resources have the greatest impact, as well as protecting services such as children’s social care and support for school improvement.”
