Councillor community free tree packs

Applications are now closed.

Round 1 is now closed to applications but we are pleased to be opening another round from 5 to 28 November 2021

Round 2 opening from 5 to 28 November 2021

As part of a new county councillor-supported pilot scheme, you can apply for free tree packs for your parish council or community group.

There are 84 County Councillors in Norfolk and each one can allocate the following tree packs within their district:

  • Three packs of ten orchard trees
  • Nine packs of ten ‘mini copse’ trees
  • Eight packs of ten native hedging packs

Read our guidance notes for more details on size and species.

Parish councils or community groups can apply to receive these free packs from their county councillor.

If you are successful, we will ask you to take photos of your completed planting and submit enough information for your trees to go onto the Norfolk tree and hedge map.

You will also need to agree to some monitoring of your planting scheme over a five year period and commit to long-term after-care of the trees.

This is a great opportunity for parish councils and community groups to get more local people engaged with the vision of the 1 Million Trees project to:

  • Make Norfolk a greener county for people and wildlife
  • Help in the fight against climate change

We can only offer a relatively small number of free trees this first year, so not every application will be successful. However, we aim to learn from this pilot and roll it out further in future years so that county councillors can support more community planting schemes.

How to apply for free tree packs - Round 2

Before you apply, you should plan your scheme and create a proposal. Use our guidance notes to help you do this.

When you’re ready to apply:

  • Contact your county councillor directly by 24 November 2021 with your proposal. Find out who you county councillor is and how to contact them.
  • Wait to hear from your councillor – they will tell you whether they are able to support your scheme this year. The fund is allocated at your councillor’s discretion.
  • If your councillor tells you they can support your scheme, complete and submit the online form by 28 November 2021
  • We will assess your application and let you know if you have been successful by 17 December 2021

Round 1 applicants should expect to hear whether they have been successful by 19 November 2021.

If your application is successful, you will receive your trees directly from the supplier. We envisage Round 2 trees will be available from the tree nurseries early in the new year.

More opportunities to get free trees

New opportunities to get free trees are coming up regularly. We would love parish councils and community groups to keep looking for places to plant more trees and add to the green corridors spreading out across Norfolk.

Can you start working with a local landowner to replace historic hedgerows? Can you link up with adjacent parish councils to have a more holistic overview of your area? Are there opportunities for natural regeneration projects in your patch? Could you build a community group who want to get involved further?

Norfolk communities are on the move for the environment, wildlife and people - we just need to link up and amplify our impact!
