Chairman visits Wymondham fire cadets
I was delighted to be invited along to the Wymondham Fire Cadets on Thursday 22 June where I was able to meet all the young people involved, as well as spend time with the crew, cadet leaders and learn more about what goes on at the weekly drill nights.
The young people were all keen for me to get a real experience, so staged a mock fire call and invited me to view the Fire Engine and experience the call as it would be for our firefighters. I was greatly impressed by their enthusiasm and team work. This was followed by a debrief and much appreciated tea and biscuits.
The Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service has a long established ethos of youth development, with the Wymondham cadet unit being set up in the early 80s and running weekly ever since. The aim of the cadet scheme has been to promote teamwork and leadership within a disciplined environment.
The cadets are run by Firefighter Steven Hornby who is supported by a team of leaders some who have been fire cadets, a retired Firefighter and current Firefighters. It was an honour and privilege to meet them all. Wymondham Fire Cadets meet up on a Thursday evening between 7-9pm at Wymondham Fire Station in order to carry out Fire Service training drills, Cadets ages range from 13 to 18 years old and open to both boys and girls. Drills range from basic hose running thorough to improvised building fires and Road Traffic Collisions, we base the training against the Firefighter role map and scenarios Firefighters came across. Throughout the year the cadets are invited to a number of fire service events and other outside activities, including hiking/camping and activity weekends.
There are five Fire Cadet units around the county including Wymondham, Diss, Sheringham, Hunstanton and Great Yarmouth. All the Fire Cadet units are run by and facilitated by Firefighters within the service, often these firefighters have come through the cadet route themselves, and act as positive role models to the young people, as well as inspirational leaders.
