How to vote in an election

If it is your first time voting in an election, check out the ‘About my Vote’ website for a ‘step by step’ guide to the voting process.

To register to vote contact your local council

Once registered, you can cast your vote in an election in three ways:

  • In person at the polling station:  A poll card will be sent to you stating where you should vote, and when the polling station will be open.
  • By post:  Any voter can decide to vote by post instead of voting at the polling station.  Visit www.aboutmyvote.co.uk for details on how to obtain a postal vote.
  • By proxy:  Under certain circumstances you can appoint someone to vote on your behalf.  You will normally need to provide evidence of your entitlement for a proxy vote.
