How to vote in an election

Once you've registered to vote, there are three ways to vote:

  • In person at the polling station - a poll card is sent to you telling you where to vote and the opening times of the polling station. You must show an approved form of photo ID when voting at a polling station. Visit the Electoral Commission website for more information about voter ID
  • By post - anyone can decide to vote by post instead of voting at the polling station. GOV.UK explain how to apply for a postal vote. There is no requirement to have photo ID for postal votes
  • By proxy - this is when someone else votes on your behalf because of certain reasons. You normally need to give evidence of your entitlement for a proxy vote.

GOV.UK has more information on the three voting options.
