How to vote in an election

Once you’ve registered to vote, there are three ways to vote:

  • In person at the polling station – a poll card is sent to you telling you where to vote and the opening times of the polling station
  • By post – anyone can decide to vote by post instead of voting at the polling station. GOV.UK explain how to apply for a postal vote
  • By proxy – this is when someone else votes on your behalf because of certain reasons. You normally need to give evidence of your entitlement for a proxy vote.

GOV.UK has more information on the three voting options.
