In June 2016, Norfolk County Council was awarded funding as part of the Department of Transport’s Sustainable Travel Transition Year.
The project; Pushing Ahead is built on existing partnerships and successful active travel initiatives to maximise the use of the current and planned investment into infrastructure for walking and cycling and will have its own website providing more information shortly.
The project focuses on the growth areas in Norwich and Great Yarmouth by:
- Reducing single occupancy car trips
- Increasing active travel to reduce congestion and improve air quality
- Improving public health
- Supporting access to work and learning
- Improving safety
Active Norfolk are coordinating a series of walking and cycling events to provide engaging opportunities for physical activity.
The events will include structured workplace challenges around walking, cycling, and active travel, with employees logging their activity to win points for their workplace and win prizes.
There will also be public cycle events in Norwich and Great Yarmouth during December and January to stimulate interest in walking and cycling whether for leisure or transport.
Norfolk’s cycle loan scheme aims to give more people access to a bicycle and actively encourage more cycling in Greater Norwich and Great Yarmouth.
You can apply to loan a bicycle for a four week period. Loaning is free, all we ask for is a small deposit of £10.
The scheme has 60 bicycles in total for use across Norwich and Gt Yarmouth.
Based on the success of the existing AtoBetter programme, the team will be using their experience to deliver two schemes as part of the Pushing Ahead project.
