Hearing impairment
The Sensory Support Unit offers the opportunity for all children and adults who use British Sign Language (BSL) to have their social care assessments conducted in BSL.
The team provides the assessment and support from qualified social workers and staff who sign to a minimum standard of BSL Level 3.
What do we do?
We assist people to plan for their support needs and provide professional interventions to enable deaf people to maximise their independence where they have a critical or substantial need.
We identify barriers that vulnerable deaf people may face in accessing services for their health and social care needs.
The social work team can also provide:
- Short term interventions to enable sign language users to be able to access community facilities.
- Provide help and advice to people who care for vulnerable deaf people.
- Work with specialist agencies such as Deaf Connexions; West Norfolk Deaf Association and Norfolk Deaf Association where we plan for on-going support needs, for example: interpreters, hearing support, befriending, and advocacy.
Clinics are held at the Norwich Deaf Centre twice a month and at King's Lynn Deaf Centre once a month. Please contact the Sensory Support Unit for dates of the clinics.
