Volunteering with your local Youth Justice Service can enable you to make a valuable contribution to your local community.

Community panel members

With the support of staff from the Youth Justice Service, Community Panel member volunteers meet children and their parents/carers to support children to take responsibility for their offending behaviour and identify ways to move forward. At the panel meeting the panel members support the children and others present to talk about the offence and its impact, and draw up a contract (a programme of work) that will enable the child to repair some of the harm caused and address any factors in their life that may lead to them committing further offences.

Restorative justice

There are opportunities for members of the community to work restoratively with children, their families, and others who have experienced harm. Volunteers who support our restorative justice work usually complete the full panel member training programme and then go on to complete additional restorative justice training.

Becoming a volunteer

Our selection processes are carefully designed to focus on assessing people's potential rather than on qualifications and experience. We are looking for people with a commitment to working with children and their parents/carers to prevent further offending and to support those affected to deal with the impact of the offence.

Many of our volunteers have told us that the flexibility of this role fits in well with work, family, or study commitments, and that the training and experience they gain in restorative practice has been useful in their personal and professional lives.

All volunteers will be required to provide references and undertake an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check. Volunteers will receive full training, ongoing supervision and support.
