Primary school road safety education courses

Introduction

This is a selection of road safety courses and other interventions designed to educate primary school students.

Most courses are designed to be delivered directly to students, a few courses are aimed at primary school staff to run as whole school projects.

The courses cover topics including pedestrian and cyclist safety, encouraging active travel and a safe school run.

Safe Journey Ahead - teacher training

Norfolk County Council Road Safety Team has successfully piloted Safe Journey Ahead with the support of the Road Safety Trust and is now an initiative available for EYFS/KS1 pupils.

Aims

The initiative is aimed at teachers, teaching assistants, school governors or any school member of staff who will be leading on road safety in your school.

Course details

The training session is delivered live online using Microsoft Teams and runs for approximately 80 minutes.

This teacher training session will cover:

  • What is road safety? How does it fit into a school setting?
  • Road safety and the curriculum
  • Exploring road safety resources
  • Planning road safety for your school

Follow up support is offered which includes coaching, lesson plans and collection of data.

Learning objectives

On completion of this session, you will:

  • Be able to plan and deliver road safety interventions aimed at the needs of your school and pupils
  • Have an increased knowledge on how to deliver the life skills of road safety to your pupils and where to find useful resources
  • Know how to embed road safety into the curriculum.

This session is free as funded by the Road Safety Trust Grant.

Step On It - online pedestrian training

This online session teaches pupils the key concepts of being a safe pedestrian. Pupils will learn about the Green Cross Code, finding safe places to cross the road and encourage pupils to think about how other road users will view them as pedestrians

Aims

To help pupils to understand and develop behaviours, to creating safe and confident pedestrians, to give the students the skills needed to become independent travellers.

Course details

This pupil experience session is delivered live online using Microsoft Teams and runs for approximately 45-60 minutes.

This session is suitable for key stage 2 pupils.

Learning objectives

  • To know and understand the green cross code
  • To know and understand what a safe place to cross is
  • To know and understand how to act as a pedestrian
  • To know and use the highway code and road signs

Ride on it - online cycle training

This online training session for key stage 2 pupils is designed for them to gain knowledge on the basics of bike safety standards and increase understanding of their responsibility when cycling on today's roads. To encourage safe behaviour when being a road user and enjoy active travel.

This pupil experience session is delivered live online using Microsoft Teams and runs for approximately 45-60 minutes.

This session is suitable for key stage 2 pupils

Learning objectives

  • To know and understand how to act as a cyclist
  • To know and use the highway code and signs
  • To know how to plan for a journey
  • Pupils understand what safe behaviours are when travelling actively

Bikeability

Bikeability training through Norfolk County Council is provided for students in training or education, delivered by Outspoken, Pedal Power and SJ3. We offer Level 1, Level 1 & 2 Combined, Level 3, Family Bikeability and Bikeability Fix.

Aims

Bikeability aims to develop cycling skills at all levels, building confidence cycling on roads and preparing riders to deal with short journeys such as cycling to school or the local shops. Ultimately helping young people to develop independence and build important social skills all leading to a sense of wellbeing.

Course details

Bikeability is practical cycling training which is delivered face to face.

The structure of delivery will be discussed to suit the school where possible.

This session is suitable for key stage 2 and 3 pupils.

Learning objectives

  • To know and understand how to act as a cyclist
  • To know and use the highway code and signs
  • To know how to plan for a journey
  • Pupils understand what safe behaviours are when travelling actively

Safe school run pledge

Norfolk County Council Road Safety Team has been working alongside the Norfolk Road Safety Partners to support school with a school led project to support creating a safe school gate environment.

The Road Safety Communities Team has developed an initiative to support your school in creating a safer school environment during the school run, as well as promoting active travel.

The 'Safe School Run Pledge' is to promote responsible parking which will help keep our children safe when they are dropped off or picked up outside the school.

The project works with parents/carers to promote safe and considerate parking, this is achieved by parents and carers signing the voluntary pledge, helping to ensure that drop off/collections at their School are as safe as possible. The Pledge has been developed with full support from NCC Road Safety Team and their Partners, Norfolk Constabulary and Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service.

Aims

To increase understanding and highlight the importance of safe parking outside the school and promote a safe school gate environment

Project details

The Safe School Run Pledge is a school-led project which can be run for a term or a full school year.

This project is suitable for all key stages.

The school-led scheme offers flexibility in delivery, with advice support and guidance from the Norfolk County Council Road Safety Team, Norfolk Constabulary and Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service. Our intention is to support you to highlight and increase parents'/carers' understanding of the importance of safe and considerate parking outside your school while encouraging safe and active journeys.

We supply a great resources pack with everything you need to run the Pledge in your school.

Seatbelt safety - online training

This online session teaches pupils the key concepts of how to stay safe when travelling in vehicles.

Aims

To help pupils to understand the importance of wearing seatbelts, how to travel safely in vehicles and how we can protect ourselves and others when travelling in vehicles.

This pupil experience session is delivered live online using Microsoft Teams and runs for approximately 45-60 minutes.This session is suitable for key stage 2 pupils.

Learning objectives

To increase understanding:

  • Of the importance of wearing a seatbelt
  • In why it is important to always wear a seatbelt in a vehicle
  • Of the implications of not wearing a seatbelt
  • That wearing a seatbelt should be a lifelong habit

Active Travel Survey

An Active Travel Survey allows for Norfolk Road Safety Team to support your school and reach your school's goals. The purpose of the Active Travel Survey is to gather information which will help you and your school to think about active travel, what pupils experience, projects available to your school and what you would like to achieve as a school.

There are 3 stages to the process:

  • An online pre active travel questionnaire will be sent to the school
  • A member of the Road Safety team will then discuss in a one to one support session the results and support you and your school with setting goals which links into your school overall objectives, plan how these can be achieved and options available to your schools
  • Six months later, a post active travel questionnaire will be sent. This will be followed up by a one to one support session with a member of the Road Safety Team.

Aims

To consider the schools active travel policy in promoting and encouraging safe active travel and to support your school achieve its long term goals.

Project Details

Active Travel Survey can be conducted at any point of the academic year.

The Survey is best led by the school's manager or travel lead.

Objectives

  • Develop a list of goals, plans to encourage active travel
  • Reducing barriers to and encourage active travel
  • Discuss road safety and practical initiatives to suit your school's needs
