Southtown Road Bridge Road area

A1243 Bridge Road/Southtown Road/Station Road junction improvements

Started: Monday 23 September 2019

Completed: 22 November 2019

Project details

We implemented proposals to improve traffic flow and cycling and walking access in the Southtown Road/Bridge Road area of Great Yarmouth by making a series of changes to the junctions and crossing facilities.

The main feature of the project was to remove the existing signals on the Southtown Road junction with Station Road, including the exit from Matalan car park along with the addition of 'right turn' lanes. This was designed to keep traffic free-flowing in the area and to reduce queuing and the time taken to exit the car park. Originally, the close proximity of these lights to those at Pasteur Road/Bridge Road/Southtown Road made it difficult to co-ordinate the two sets of signals to optimise traffic flow.

A new toucan crossing and cycle lanes were installed to help those travelling by foot or bicycle whilst a relocated bus stop on Southtown Road makes it easier for buses to re-join traffic lanes into town.

The works took nine weeks to complete. These works were coordinated with the Environment Agency's flood defence works taking place around Bollard Quay at the southern end of Southtown Road.
