AtoBetter school programmes
If your school is in one of our funding areas, you could receive up to £2,000 to support active and sustainable school travel.
Funding can be used for:
- Improved bike/scooter parking
- School-use bicycles
- Cycle training for students and staff
- Bike tool stations
- Fun events like Dr Bike and bike security marking
- Prizes for travel competitions and campaigns
Primary Schools
To access funding, simply:
- Sign up to Modeshift STARS
- Commit to delivering a variety of activities over the next two years
- Complete an annual hands-up survey
Secondary Schools
To access funding, simply:
- Complete the Active Travel Ambassador (ATA) Programme, delivered by our partner Modeshift
- Complete an annual hands-up survey
What is Modeshift STARS?
Modeshift STARS is a national accreditation scheme that celebrates schools excelling in sustainable travel.
School travel plans aim to:
- Encourage walking, cycling, and greener journeys
- Improve road safety
- Reduce congestion and pollution
- Promote health and independence

What is the Active Travel Ambassador (ATA) Programme?
The ATA Programme empowers secondary students (ages 11-16) to lead campaigns that promote walking, cycling, and road safety. It's free, curriculum-linked, and helps students build skills in:
- Project management
- Public speaking
- Leadership
- Data analysis
- Marketing
And it works!
- Framingham Earl High doubled cycling rates and installed a new cycle shelter
- Ormiston Venture Academy increased active travel by 9% and purchased Go Carts
- Every ATA school last year earned Modeshift STARS accreditation
