Gunton Park Sawmill

Gunton Park Sawmill

This water powered sawmill was built in the 1820s to provide timber for the Gunton Park estate. It ceased working in the 1950s.

The thatched timber-framed building contains a vertical framesaw. This is powered by one of two waterwheels fed from an artificial lake known as Saw Mill Pond. The second wheel was used to power a circular saw bench and grist mill.

The mill was in a dilapidated state when Norfolk County Council took on the lease in 1979. The restored mill was opened to the public for the first time in 1989. In 2013 the roof thatch was replaced thanks to a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The mill is managed by Norfolk Windmills Trust and is operated by volunteers. It is a Grade II* listed building.

The sawmill is situated in a private park. Gunton Park Sawmill website advertises open days and details of other special events.
