Interreg North-West Europe

The Interreg North-West Europe programme fosters transnational cooperation to make north western Europe a key economic player and an attractive place to work and live, with high levels of innovation, sustainability and cohesion.

Case study

Energetic Algae (EnAlgae)

This project developed an integrated network of algal plant pilot projects which considered the technological requirements, economics and environmental aspects of growing algal biomass and converting it to bioenergy.

The project brought together 19 partners and 14 observers across seven countries and received €7.38 million for a total budget of €14.62 million over six years.

Please note that this project was funded under the previous programme (2007-2013) and that the new programme (2014-2020) has different objectives.

Low carbon

  • To facilitate the implementation of low-carbon, energy and climate protection strategies in order to reduce GHG-emissions in North-West Europe
  • To facilitate the uptake of low carbon technologies, products, processes and services in sectors with high energy saving potential in order to reduce GHG-emissions in North-West Europe
  • To facilitate the implementation of transnational low-carbon solutions in transport systems in order to reduce GHG-emissions in North-West Europe

Resource and materials efficiency

  • To optimise (re)use of material and natural resources in North-West Europe



Match funding

The North-West Europe programme can co-finance projects by up to 60% of the eligible costs.


Eligibility criteria

The programme is open to any registered entity based in the eligible area: Ireland, UK, Belgium, Luxembourg, France (part), Germany (part), the Netherlands (part) and Switzerland.



Projects must involve at least three partners from at least three different countries. At least two of the partners must come from the programme area. The average number of partners in previous years was nine.

The Lead Partner must be from a programme country and be a not-for-profit organisation.


Call dates

The North-West Europe programme has a two-stage application process with the submission of a Phase 1 application form followed by a more detailed Phase 2 application form for successful applicants.
