Norfolk Libraries celebrate Get Online Week

Norfolk County Council, 17 October 2022 00:00

Throughout this week (17 to 21 October) Norfolk Libraries are encouraging people to see how they can improve their lives through connectivity.

Get Online Week is celebrated nationally every October, and this year Norfolk County Council are promoting #JustOneThing, focussing on helping people sign up for services offered by the NHS, such as online GP services, and the NHS app.

People will be able to get support from staff in all 47 of Norfolk's libraries to register for a variety of online services. This support is offered all year round, alongside a whole host of other services which are designed to promote Digital Inclusion.

These services include:

  • A suite of apps that anyone who joins the library can access such as Press Reader, Libby, and BorrowBox - putting online newspapers, magazines, and eBooks at your fingertips on your device
  • Support with HMRC online services - helping you save money
  • A team of volunteer Digital Champions who help people to improve their computer skills for free, such as using a mouse or navigating software
  • A range of clubs for young people and families, to encourage them to explore, such as our popular code clubs, which is soon to expand into robotics clubs
  • Free WIFI and access to public PCs

Cllr Margaret Dewsbury, cabinet member for communities and partnerships, said: "We are a very rural county and ensuring that all our residents are supported to get online is a key aspect of Digital Inclusion.

"It's great that our libraries are able to offer so much support for those who need help accessing services in an ever increasingly digital world."

Norfolk Libraries are also part of the National Databank which provides adults who are in need with 6-months of free data via a SIM card. So far over 35,000GB of data has been provided, including over 3,500GB given out via the Ukraine Welcome sessions - find out how to sign up for these sessions.
