Public Consultation for West Winch Housing Access Road to launch next week

A public consultation on the West Winch Housing Access Road will launch later this month.

This will be an opportunity for people to give their views on the project before the planning application is finalised and submitted next year.

The public consultation will start on Monday 14 November and will close eight weeks later, at midnight on Sunday 8 January.

The new road will serve the South East King's Lynn Growth Area (known locally as the West Winch Growth area) which will see up to 4,000 new homes built over the next 20 years.

The road will connect the A10 to the A47, starting south of Gravelhill Lane in West Winch and joining the A47 before it reaches the Hardwick Junction. The scheme would also see the dualling of the A47 between the Hardwick Interchange and the new access road, with a new signalised roundabout on the A47. Improvements will be made to the Hardwick Interchange to accommodate the changes.

The West Winch Housing Access Road will also help to address local traffic problems by creating an alternative route around the village of West Winch. This will also provide the opportunity to introduce measures along the existing A10 that will improve the experience for pedestrians, cyclists and bus passengers, as well as discouraging through traffic between West Winch and the Hardwick Interchange.

Once completed, the new access road will become part of the A10.

Three public events will be held during the consultation period. Each event will have information about the scheme on display and members of the project team on hand to discuss the proposals and answer any questions. These events will be held at:

  • West Winch Primary School (PE33 0LA) on Wednesday 23 November, 4pm to 9pm
  • The Village Meeting Place, North Runcton (PE33 0RB) on Saturday 10 December, 10am to 4pm
  • West Winch Primary School (PE33 0LA) on Wednesday 4 January, 4pm to 9pm

Once the consultation launches on 14 November, information on the proposals will be available via the Norfolk County Council website at www.norfolk.gov.uk/WestWinchA10 where there will be an opportunity to fill in an online questionnaire. Email and postal responses will also be accepted.

The planning application for the project is due to be submitted next year. Subject to gaining necessary statutory approvals, construction of the West Winch Housing Access Road is expected to get underway in 2025 with construction taking around 2 years.

About the South East King's Lynn Growth Area (known locally as the West Winch Growth area) The West Winch Strategic Growth Area is the largest and most strategically important site for housing in west Norfolk and will bring up to 4,000 new homes as well as a new housing access road. It will also offer employment opportunities, commercial space, community resources, health facilities, education, play facilities, public open spaces, and transport links all on one site.

Norfolk County Council are working in partnership with The Borough Council of King's Lynn and West Norfolk and on this project. Norfolk County Council is leading on delivering the transport infrastructure and the Borough Council of King's Lynn and West Norfolk is leading on enabling the delivery of the Strategic Growth Area proposals.

In the summer of 2022, the Borough Council of King's Lynn & West Norfolk conducted a consultation on the Growth Area Framework Masterplan Supplementary Planning Document (SPD).
