Your home education questions answered

Work experience and paid work

Can my child be employed while home educating?

Working while of statutory school age can be a valuable part of a young person's learning experience. It can help prepare them for the adult world of work.

But certain rules and regulations apply, such as:

  • They must not work during school hours even if home-educated
  • The employer must hold a licence and the young person a permit

Our colleagues in Child Employment can help with further information. See Children in employment and entertainment.

How do I arrange work experience?

Home educated children can take part in work experience. As a parent or carer you will need to arrange this.

Virtual work experience is also available. See our Secondary KS3/KS4 section.
