Opening date announced for new Great Yarmouth Library

Great Yarmouth Library is due to reopen at its new location, 'The Place,' on 6 May 2025, it has been announced today.
This will mark a new chapter for the library, which will be housed in the former Palmers department store - a central and easily accessible location in the heart of Great Yarmouth.
Councillor Margaret Dewsbury, cabinet member for communities and partnerships at Norfolk County Council, said:
"'The Place' is a transformative project for Great Yarmouth. It not only preserves a beloved historic building but also revitalizes it as a modern centre for education and community services. The relocation of Great Yarmouth Library to 'The Place' will make it more accessible to our community. By bringing together like-minded services under one roof, we are creating a central hub that will better serve the needs of our residents. This move shows our commitment to improving local services in communities across the county, creating a welcoming space for learning and support."
To facilitate the move, the existing Great Yarmouth Library on Tolhouse Street will be closed from 14 March 2025. Any items that have been borrowed from Great Yarmouth Library will be extended until the new library opens and regular groups will be run from alternative venues in the town. The registry office will be temporarily moving to Gorleston Library to continue providing its services.
'The Place' is a flagship £17m regeneration project that will transform the historic Palmers building into a vibrant community hub that will host a variety of services, including the new library, adult learning services, the Registry Office. Additionally, 'The Place' will feature a new university and learning centre through a partnership with East Coast College and the University of Suffolk.
Councillor Carl Smith, leader of Great Yarmouth Borough Council, said:
