Wensum Lodge sold to historic building specialists

Norfolk County Council , 21 May 2025 16:04

Norfolk County Council has completed the sale of Wensum Lodge to heritage property specialists, Slow Norfolk. The company plans to breathe new life into the site, creating a vibrant riverside location for Norwich's thriving creative sector.

Councillor Jane James, cabinet member at corporate services and innovation at Norfolk County Council, said:

"We are pleased to see Wensum Lodge pass into the hands of a team that values its heritage and has a clear vision for its future. This sale will ensure the site continues to serve the community in a new and exciting way."

Slow Norfolk is a local company that was set up by Mark and Helen Littlewood to breathe new life into historic buildings across Norfolk, ensuring they remain integral to the region's future.

Mark Littlewood, director of Slow Norfolk, said:

"We believe Wensum Lodge offers an unrivalled opportunity to work on a charming city-centre stretch of the River Wensum, connecting history and nature with local transport links and city centre commuter access. Our aim is to preserve the architectural character of the site while creating a dynamic space for Norwich's thriving creative community."

The proposed plans include converting the complex into a creative business hub, welcoming designers, architects, writers, artists, and marketing professionals. OneAgency, an award-winning marketing agency with offices in Norwich and London, has already committed to becoming the anchor tenant.

Stephanie Northen, acting chair of the Friends of Wensum Lodge, said:

"We are thrilled to hear of the success of Slow Norfolk's bid. Mark Littlewood's huge enthusiasm for Wensum Lodge - the location, the buildings and their history - is inspiring. Slow Norfolk's vision of a creative hub is one that the Friends are delighted to support. We look forward to seeing Wensum Lodge shining bright again at the heart of Norwich's creative community."

Slow Norfolk also plans to incorporate training and education opportunities, supporting apprenticeships and nurturing local talent within the creative industries. The development will honour the site's legacy - from its 19th-century origins as the Crown Brewery to its more recent role as a centre for adult education.

The decision to sell Wensum Lodge was made by Norfolk County Council in the summer of 2023, following a review of the council's property portfolio. The location held courses for the council's Adult Learning service, which was rated as 'Good' by Ofsted in December 2023.
