The Wendling Way

(Dereham to Gressenhall) - A 3.2 mile trail linking Dereham town centre to Gressenhall Environmental Hub, providing a safe and direct route for visitors on foot and bike

As you start the trail in Dereham, keep an eye out for St. Withburga's Well and the historic plaque that marks the spot. Along Sandy Lane, a circular walk detour brings you to Rush Meadow Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) where the aim is to prevent the further decline of species by conserving the habitats that support them. The route then passes through The Wendling Beck Project, one of the most important and exciting rewilding projects in the country before taking you along The Wensum Way - near Beetley Common and Hoe Rough.

The Wendling Way finishes at the Museum of Norfolk Life and Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse. Essential viewing for anyone wanting to explore what day-to-day life was really like for those who once lived and worked in Norfolk.

Improving accessibility:

Phase 1 of the improvement project involves resurfacing a 1.2km stretch of path between Gingerbread Corner and the southern part of Mill Lane. The landowner has allowed cyclists to use this section. However, parts of Mill Lane are muddy and there's no lowered curb at the Fakenham Road crossing, which could make it difficult for people using wheelchairs or pushing prams.

At Gingerbread Corner, there's a wide 'kissing gate' that cyclists must get off their bikes to pass through. Tandem bikes and tricycles are unlikely to fit through this gate but we're exploring other options. We're also continuing to work with the landowners through the Wendling Beck project to make this area more accessible to the public.
