Norfolk County Council has announced a new series of household hazardous waste days (HHWDs) this autumn, offering residents the opportunity to safely dispose of unwanted hazardous materials at seven recycling centres across the county.

The autumn HHWDs will take place on the following dates:

  • Norwich South - Friday 3 and Saturday 4 October
  • King's Lynn - Friday 10 and Saturday 11 October
  • Caister - Friday 24 and Saturday 25 October
  • Dereham - Friday 31 October and Saturday 1 November
  • Thetford - Friday 7 and Saturday 8 November
  • Hempton - Friday 21 and Saturday 22 November
  • Norwich North - Friday 28 and Saturday 29 November

Councillor James Bensly, cabinet member for environment and waste, said: "It's great to see the return of Household Hazardous Waste Days at Norfolk's Recycling Centres. Our extra spring events this year were efficient and well-organised, demonstrating the benefits of our booking system. No customer waited more than 10 minutes to gain access, with most entering without delay. These are free events put on by Norfolk County Council, which give residents right across the county the opportunity to safely dispose of hazardous waste items such as flammable liquids or pesticides. I encourage anyone with these items to book a free slot."

HHWDs are the only times that Norfolk's recycling centres accept hazardous materials, including paint.

As with the spring events, the Council will use the recycling centres' booking system to manage demand and ensure smooth operations. A separate booking calendar will be available for HHWDs, and regular household waste bookings will be suspended at hosting centres during these events. Bookings can be made online or by phone and will be open a week before each event.

The last round of HHWDs, held in spring 2025, saw:

  • 296,166 kg of hazardous materials safely disposed
  • 6,795 bookings completed
  • An average of 47.13 kg of waste per customer
  • Paint as the most commonly received hazardous material
