Excitement is building as King's Lynn's Library takes shape behind the scenes - set to welcome visitors later this year.

Located in the former Argos building, the ambitious project will transform the space and bring together a wide range of services across three floors.

The new library will offer visitors access to library spaces for all ages alongside adult learning courses, business support, community services, and flexible spaces for events and workshops.

Councillor Kay Mason Billig, Leader of Norfolk County Council, said:

"Placing the library right in the heart of King's Lynn means we're putting vital services where people already are—on the high street.

"This project represents one of the most significant investments in West Norfolk in recent years. It's about more than bricks and mortar—it's about creating a space that brings people together and opens doors to learning, support, and growth."

Local councillor Lesley Bambridge said:

"Libraries offer a much wider service these days to when I first went weekly to my nearest library with my parents when very young. This has been shown by the Forum in Norwich and most, recently in Gt. Yarmouth. I am looking forward to seeing the benefit to the residents of King's Lynn and extended area."

The new King's Lynn Library will include:

  • Modern library space including a bespoke children's library, young person's library, business library, quiet study space and a home for our historic collection that can be accessed by the public.
  • A permanent and dedicated home for Adult Learning on the second floor. Including a large multi-purpose room that can be used for any from a conference or business meeting to a language course or a yoga class.
  • Meeting room and flexible events space (for up to 100 people) that residents, groups and local business can hire at reduced rates
  • A purpose-built training kitchen
  • A bespoke and exciting programming series, designed with community groups, young people and partners such as the College of West Anglia

The project has a budget of £15.1m and is funded by Norfolk County Council and the UK Government.

The building is due to open before the end of the year. The exact date will be shared nearer the time.

The current library on London Road is set to be retained for community use, with The Workshop (run by the Garage Trust) due to take over the space. The charity has a long-established presence in King's Lynn, offering a wide range of music, theatre, and dance classes and community activities.
