The Emergency First Aid at Work Course is aimed at anyone looking to gain a basic level of first aid training.

The course meets the training legislative requirements of the HSE (Health and Safety Executive) and Ofsted. This is an ideal course for first aiders in low risk working environments, such as offices or shops. The course complies with your legal duties under the Health and Safety (First-aid) regulations 1981 under Selecting a first aid training provider.

We offer this course as both an open and closed course. Closed courses are for a maximum of 12 delegates and we can adapt and tailor the content to meet specific industry and environmental requirements. Learning objectives

The practical, skills-based content of the course ensures you will gain the knowledge, skills, understanding and confidence to embed your learning in daily life.

Following the completion of the Emergency First Aid at Work course, you will have the skills and knowledge to confidently:

  • Understand the role of the first aider
  • Understand the importance of preventing cross infection
  • Understand the need for recording incidents and actions
  • Understand the use of available equipment
  • Assess the situation and circumstances in order to act safely, promptly and effectively in an emergency
  • Administer first aid to a casualty who is unconscious (including seizure)
  • Administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation and use an automated external defibrillator
  • Administer first aid to a casualty who is choking
  • Administer first aid to a casualty who is wounded and bleeding
  • Administer first aid to a casualty who is suffering from shock
  • Provide appropriate first aid for minor injuries (including small cuts, grazes and bruises, minor burns and scalds, small splinters)

Course content

  1. Introduction and admin
  2. Training and assessment subjects covered:
    • Role of the first aider
    • Preventing cross infection
    • Incident recording
    • Use of available equipment (first aid kit)
    • Assessing a situation
    • Acting safely, promptly and effectively in an emergency
    • Unconscious casualty
    • Seizures
    • CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation)
    • Use of an AED (automated external defibrillator)
    • Choking
    • Bleeding
    • Shock
    • Minor injuries (cuts grazes ,splinters)
    • minor burns
  3. Conclusion, feedback & admin

The content of the course and any additional training will be tailored to meet your needs and to include any particular hazards in your workplace. These could include but are not limited to:

  • Paediatric first aid: infant & baby CPR, choking infant & baby
  • Major illness: heart attack, stroke, epilepsy, asthma, diabetes
  • Haemostatic dressing or tourniquets
  • Oxygen administration
  • Drowning
  • Cyanide poisoning
  • Hydrofluoric acid burns
  • Hypothermia or hyperthermia

Please let us know of any additional training you may need, as we may need to add time to the course.

Recommended for: All staff - especially relevant for first aiders in low risk working environments eg office and retail

Duration: One day (Approximately 6.5 to 7.5 hours)

Certification: Meeting the training legislative requirements of the HSE (Health and Safety Executive) a certificate of completion will be awarded. This is valid for three years. We recommend a yearly one-day refresher course.

Cost: All courses have a maximum number of 12 delegates. This is so we can address the training needs of individual candidates and adequately assess their competence. If you require more than 12 delegates, another trainer might be needed, the training session might need to be longer or it might be best to run two courses.

Refreshments: Will be provided throughout the day (tea, coffee, biscuits). Please bring your own lunch (a fridge is available for storage).

Equality: If you have any disabilities or learning needs, please inform us seven days before the course so any reasonable adjustments can be discussed.

Note: Due to the practical nature of this course we recommend that you wear flat shoes and trousers.
