Construction starts on economically important Hethel scheme
A major infrastructure project in South Norfolk to accelerate the advanced engineering and manufacturing sector, has reached a key milestone. Following the successful completion of extensive preliminary works, the main construction of the new roundabout and spine road at Hethel is now officially underway.
The scheme, delivered through a partnership between South Norfolk Council and Norfolk County Council, provides the essential infrastructure required to support the future growth of the Hethel Engineering Centre (HEC). The project will unlock land owned by Hethel Enterprises and further enhance the Lotus Cars site, creating a world-class hub for engineering firms to sit alongside the iconic sports car manufacturer.
With the preparatory phase concluded, the project moves into the heavy construction stage of a new three-arm roundabout on Wymondham Road, and a spine road providing direct access to a new employment area. Following a period of temporary lights, Wymondham Road will be closed from June until September, with suitable diversions in place. Local residents and businesses will receive regular updates on traffic management plans and overall construction dates.
This major project will unlock 20 hectares of land, allocated in the Greater Norwich Local Development Plan, enabling more start-up businesses to move into the HEC and provide the space necessary for established technology-based businesses to grow.
The improvements also include new pedestrian and cycling facilities to encourage active travel for the local workforce.
Funding for this strategic initiative is provided by the Greater Norwich Growth Board, Norfolk County Council, and South Norfolk Council, with project oversight provided by Hainstone.
