Closure of Morningthorpe Recycling Centre
Norfolk County Council is informing residents that Morningthorpe Recycling Centre will close permanently on 31 October 2026.
The current 25 year lease for the site is due to expire and unfortunately the landowner has confirmed that no further extensions will be available beyond February 2027.
To meet regulatory requirements and allow time to return the land to the appropriate condition, we have no choice but to close the site in October 2026.
Where to take your waste and recycling
The closest alternative recycling centre for residents who usually use Morningthorpe Recycling Centre is:
- Norwich South Recycling Centre
Our Norwich South site is located off the A140 / A47 and due to it's easy access and wide range of disposal options many residents living in the South Norfolk area already choose this site.
This is our most modern facility with extra disposal options in addition to it's popular reuse shop and it has capacity to handle additional visitors.
Councillor James Bensly, cabinet member for environment and waste said; "It's disappointing that we have to close this facility, but the decision has been taken out of our hands. The landowner has confirmed they are not willing to extend the lease beyond early 2027, which means we must bring operations to an end this October to meet our regulatory responsibilities and return the site to the required condition. I want to reassure residents that we're committed to providing a smooth transition, and our modern Norwich South Recycling Centre is ready to welcome any new visitors."
Residents can book your visit to any of Norfolk's recycling centres online at: www.norfolk.gov.uk/recycling
Residents are also reminded that local district council waste services are also available including
- Bulky waste collections
- Garden waste bin services
