09 Jun - SENDfest 2026 at Banham Zoo brings joy to hundreds of children

Around 2,500 children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) and their families came together at Banham Zoo for a day of music, creativity and connection at SENDfest 2026.

Organised by the Norfolk and Suffolk Music Hub, the free event yesterday (Sunday 7 June) welcomed families from across the county.

Supported by 50 volunteers, the festival created a relaxed and inclusive environment where everyone could enjoy the day at their own pace.

This year's SENDfest introduced a reimagined format, replacing pre-booked workshops with flexible, drop-in activities. This approach was well received by families, who valued the freedom to move around the site and choose activities that suited their needs.

The zoo setting offered space, nature and a calm atmosphere, helping to create a welcoming environment throughout the day. Families could choose between a quieter 'Chilled Vibes' session in the morning or the full 'Festival Vibes' experience from late morning onwards.

Activities took place across the site and included creative workshops such as bath bomb making, keeper talks and animal encounters, bug handling, pop up performances and rides on the land train. Music remained at the heart of the day, with the popular penguin silent disco, a main stage programme, a Big Sing and special guest performances from beatboxer Shlomo and Aston Merrygold from JLS.

A relaxed theatre performance was also a hit with families. Memorable moments were found throughout the site, from children dressing up to a curious cheetah appearing to listen to the music, with the giraffes remaining a firm favourite.

SENDfest was announced at the Family Voice Norfolk conference in March, with free tickets fully booked within a day, reflecting strong demand from families.

Norfolk County Council leads the Norfolk and Suffolk Music Hub.

Councillor Wendy Atkinson, cabinet member for Children's Services, said:
"I was delighted to attend SENDfest and see first-hand what a fantastic event it was. It was clear how much children and their families valued the experience. It was great work by our music hub colleagues to create an atmosphere which was so welcoming, inclusive and full of joy."

SENDfest is designed to provide inclusive activities, bring families together and connect them with support and services. Open to accompanied young people under 25, the event also provides quiet spaces across the site for those who need them.

SENDfest 2026 was a celebration of inclusion, community and shared experiences.
