Norfolk Greenways

We are conducting a feasibility study looking to develop a greenway network across the county.  We aim for them to extend across Norfolk and link into the Norfolk Trails network of promoted walking and cycling routes.

Greenways offer a safe route for people and animals to travel.  Our study is focusing on the benefits of health, wellbeing, economy, increased biodiversity, alleviation of congestion and air quality improvements.

Officers started working on the project in April 2018, focusing on three disused railways:

  • Weavers' Way between Aylsham and Stalham
  • King's Lynn to Fakenham
  • King's Lynn to Hunstanton

About greenways

The proposed areas will link in with the public transport network and the existing long-distance walking and cycling network in Norfolk - Norfolk Trails. The routes worked on during this project will be very close to the Paston Way, Marriott's Way, Bure Valley Path, Nar Valley Way, Peddars Way, Fen Rivers Way and the Norfolk Coast Path.

We aim to make our Greenways as accessible as possible for all user groups, for example disabled users or horse riders, but access for different groups may depend on each specific landowner.

We will be looking at a range of different options for costs across the proposed areas.

Events

We ran a series of events along the affected areas of the Weaver's Way and Norfolk Coast Path in September and October 2019.  These events gave us an opportunity to speak to local residents and stakeholder groups who were able to voice their views and opinions on the project, and find out any other information they wanted to know.

If you have any questions about the Norfolk Greenways project or the work due to take place in the 2019/2020, email norfolkgreenways@norfolk.gov.uk.

2019/2020

Following the first year's feasibility study, we have secured funding for work on Weavers' Way and Norfolk Coast Path to improve safety and all year-round accessibility for all, along with new circular walks on the routes. This work will begin in November 2019 and will be completed in March 2020.

The projects are Revitalising Our Railway: Weaver's Way, and Coastal Connections: Wells - Holkham Circular Route.  These projects are to improve the surface of the Norfolk Coast Path and the Weaver's Way.  There will be a new circular walk waymarked through Wells-next-the-Sea from the Norfolk Coast Path.  From the Weaver's Way there will be a series of new circular walks and the installation of new gates in the style of Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway gates.

Both projects are funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development.
