St Stephens Road

June to September 2022

This project was designed to create more pedestrian and cycle-friendly routes through the St Stephens Road area to encourage more people to walk or cycle and support the long-term goals of Transport for Norwich partners to reduce congestion and pollution across the city centre.

Details of work

  • One-way traffic on Grove Road towards its junction with St Stephens Road
  • One-way traffic on Grove Avenue from its junction with Ipswich Road towards its junction with Grove Walk.
  • A two-way segregated cycle lane on Grove Road to the St Stephens Road junction
  • Footway widening on Ipswich Road near the Grove Road junction
  • Optimised traffic signals for pedestrians, cycles, buses and general traffic
  • Widening of the existing pedestrian crossing on St Stephens Road
  • Speed tables to facilitate continuous footways across the junctions with Victoria Street, Kingsley Road, Grove Avenue and Ipswich Grove

This project is part of a programme of infrastructure changes in the Greater Norwich area, which was agreed by the county council's Cabinet in 2019 and is funded by the Department for Transport's (DfT) Transforming Cities Fund.

The Department for Transport (DfT) has awarded £32m of funding to TfN from the Transforming Cities Fund to deliver a range of schemes across Greater Norwich. These projects aim to improve access to jobs, training and retail by supporting improvements to sustainable modes of transport, while also responding to issues around air quality.

More information about our application to the DfT and all the proposed schemes can be found at our Transforming Cities Fund page. You can also read more about previous, current and future TfN projects by visiting Transport for Norfolk.
