Long Stratton Bypass

The Long Stratton Bypass opened to traffic in early August 2025 and immediately had a positive effect on the town.

Locals campaigned for a bypass for many decades, and Norfolk County Council's infrastructure project took contractor Octavius Infrastructure 18 months to build.

All major works on the road, which is 2.4km long and cost £47m, are now complete. There was an official opening ceremony at the end of October, with a plaque unveiled by NCC leader Cllr Kay Mason Billig and local county councillor Alison Thomas.

The bypass has already helped to ease congestion in Long Stratton, improved air quality and created a safer, more pleasant environment in the town.

The project was a collaboration with South Norfolk Council and Norfolk Homes, with developer contributions and major funding commitments from the Department for Transport, Greater Norwich Growth Board and South Norfolk Council.

Locals had a one-off chance to walk, run or cycle along the bypass during a 'Summer on the Bypass' event just before it opened to traffic.

Almost £27m was spent in the local area during the construction of the bypass.

Student placements, apprenticeships and education workshops in local schools took place. There were also two community projects which helped transform outdoor space at two primary schools, St Mary's Church of England Junior Academy and Manor Field Infant and Nursery School, supported by Octavius' supplier chain partners.

This work builds on a wider programme of educational outreach, where the STEM and Climate Ambassadors from the Long Stratton Bypass project have already delivered sustainability and biodiversity workshops to over 600 local students.

The newly transformed green spaces will directly support the development of both schools' Climate Action Plans, which aim to integrate green skills and sustainability into school environments.
