Active Travel Fund

Active Travel England is the government's executive agency responsible for making walking, wheeling and cycling the preferred choice for everyone to get around in England.

Active travel makes people happier and healthier, which is why Active Travel England wants to increase the number of local journeys being walked, wheeled or cycled by 2030 and make active travel part of everyday life.

The Active Travel Fund supports local authorities with grant funding for the development and/or construction of inclusive walking, wheeling and cycling schemes.

Since the fund started in 2020 we have been allocated over £22 million for capital schemes which support these objectives, with many projects successfully delivered and further schemes in various stages of development.

The above figure includes a confirmed £3.05 million per year allocation up to 28/29 and forms part of the Governments £2 billion commitment set out in Gear Change to deliver a step change in the provision of active travel and better streets for walking, wheeling and cycling.

All schemes put forward must be aligned with local cycling and walking infrastructure plans (LCWIP) and developed/approved in consultation with Active Travel England but certainty over future funding gives us far greater flexibility over our delivery programme.

Each scheme will be subject to public consultation and will be fully integrated with wider transport initiatives such as Transport for Norwich.

Read on for details of the schemes currently being developed under the latest funding rounds and all those delivered to date.
