Active Travel update - August 2021

Initial stakeholder engagement with MPs and local councillors has been carried out on all proposed schemes which has highlighted key local issues that will be fully considered during wider engagement with the public, businesses and interested groups.

Public consultation on a new segregated crossing facility for the National Cycle Network Route 1 Cycle at Gaywood Road in Kings Lynn was completed earlier this year and was the first active travel scheme to be delivered in the county following approval to proceed to construction.

Public consultation on cycle safety improvements to the Green Pedalway on St Williams Way in Norwich was completed in March 2021 and this scheme has also now been approved for construction by members of the Transport for Norwich Joint Committee. See further details on the scheme.

Public consultation on all remaining schemes within the proposed programme of Active Travel improvements will be held later this summer once further design work has been completed and the local elections have been held. All Active Travel measures proposed in Norwich will be developed alongside the wider Transforming Cities programme so that consultation, engagement and delivery can be well co-ordinated. Development of Active Travel measures elsewhere in Norfolk will also be integrated with other transport schemes and initiatives being delivered in those areas.

Work is progressing well to establish the appropriate resource needed to deliver a range of initiatives to support behaviour change around increased use of active travel modes. Funded through the revenue support element of our funding award, this will focus on partnership working across stakeholders and local authorities, engagement with key businesses, attitudinal surveys and initiatives aimed at creating safer environments for walking and cycling.
